How To Choose A Toilet Bowl: 4 Simple Guidelines

Updated: Apr 12, 2021

Choosing a toilet bowl is no easy task. With the wide range of designs available, it is easy to feel overwhelmed by choices. Here, we have prepared 4 considerations to help you narrow down your choices

1. Type Of Waste Outlet

In Singapore's context, our household water closets (WC) have 2 types of water outlets. Namely, P trap and S trap. P traps are water outlets that are connected to the wall whereas S trap WCs are connected to the floor (refer to figure 1). These traps are based on household types and geographical area.

It is important to identify the type of waste outlet as it may limit the choices available for a suitable model. To identify, simply take a look at the water closet sideways.

2. Outlook and Style

There are two distinct styles of WCs:

1) Close Coupled

This type are the most commonly found in household whereby they are freestanding on the ground. Following Singapore guidelines, they are 400mm tall unless made specially for handicapped or taller users (450mm).

2) Wall hung

As the name suggests, they are hanging from the wall and gives users the liberty to choose an ideal flush button style to suit their bathroom theme (Figure. They are generally pricier and are widely used in new households due to their sleek appearance.

3. Flushing Style

Currently in the market there are 3 types of flushing:

1) Wash down

Wash down types are the most common as they are the traditional way of flushing. They have been in the market for more than 20 years and have a number of holes all underneath the inner pan of the toilet whenever you flush.

2) Rimless

This type of WC saves the hassle of scrubbing the hole underneath the inner pan as there are no longer any rims around. Aside from convenience, they also provide a strong water pressure to ensure all wastes are able to be flushed through with just one flush.

3) Tornado/ Double Vortex

As the name implies, this type of flush projects powerful jets of power from inside the bowl to create a whirlpool effect. This helps to clean the surfaces more effectively.

4.Sitting Shape

As our bodies are shaped differently, it is important to find a seat that will suit our bottoms the best. In the market, seats are generally categories into 3 main shapes.

1) Round

These seats are wider and rounder at the front, which makes it the most similar to our natural shape.

2)Triangle

They are usually elongated with a sharper end, making it suitable for those that prefer a sleeker outlook.

3)Square

They can be easily spotted with the front of the seat fanned out. This unique design captures the heart of those looking for something uncommon,

It is important to note that after narrowing down the shape, it is encouraged for users to have a sit on the bowl as the width/ length varies for different models.

All in all, there are many types of WCs in the market, varying in design, price points and warranty coverage. Since they are going to be installed in our homes for more than 10 years, it is of utmost importance to choose a model that is durable, effective in cleaning and comfortable.
